St. George’s Church in Moscow was built on the original territory of Georgian King Vakhtang VI’s palace which was built after Georgian Nobles and King himself immigrated to Moscow in the first half of 18thc century.

His son, Prince Giorgi, who was the General of Russian army, began building of St. George’s church, in 18th century. The place where church was originally built is called “Gruzino”, which means “Georgian Settlement” in Russian. A number of people who were raised in this settlement, have later become famous and active members of Russian political and social life.

The church is the mixture of Georgian and Russian Orthodox traditions and plays a great role in the understanding of both cultures.

The painting of it began in 1996 and ended in 2001. Iconographer Lasha Kintsurashvili was invited to paint the church by the head of Georgian Community in Moscow, Temur Sturua.
